With its excellent photographs in a layout designed by Chargesheimer himself and the delicate text “Strassen wie diese” by Heinrich Böll, this photobook paints a vivid picture of the postwar period.

Chargesheimer (Karl Heinz Hargesheimer, 1924 – 1971) was a Cologne artist and photographer who, even in the post-war period, repeatedly transgressed the too narrowly defined boundaries of the cultural establishment: the radical visual artist worked as a stage designer and theater director, constructed kinetic sculptures and experimented with photographic techniques.  He gained fame above all with his numerous photographic portraits and illustrated books he designed himself.
