Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller, Jürgen Klauke, Christa Mayer, Helmut Schweizer, Nil Yalter, Lin Zhipeng (林志鹏) aka No.223
The exhibition titled selbst focuses on self-portraits as a medium for self-empowerment and liberation from social norms and limitations. In their works, the participating artists reflect on themes such as identity, sexuality, and society.
The video “The Headless Woman or the Belly Dance” by Nil Yalter, who grew up in Cairo and Istanbul and later lived in Paris, is exemplary for this debate. In her feminist self-portrait from 1974, Yalter addresses the repressive treatment of female sexuality in a unique way. The photographic self-portraits by Chinese artist Lin Zhipeng aka No.223 were created more than 40 years later. With his open and unfiltered approach, he captures moments of spontaneity and vulnerability and allows us as viewers to experience his person directly.
