Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller is an exceptional artist. Born in London in 1946, she spent her childhood years mainly in East Berlin and Vienna. Today living in Vienna and Paris, her photographic and cinematic work impressively explores human identities. She is widely regarded as a pioneer of conceptual photography and has successfully developed her own visual language as an independent filmmaker.

„I don't do anything else in my whole life but take an interest in people“

Her interest in people was already revealed during her work as a fashion photographer after her education at the Grafische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna (1965-1969). The often bulky images focus more on the personality of the models and their relationship to space than on the actual purpose of representing fashion.

Early on, Kubelka vom Gröller, who also has training as a psychoanalyst, recognized the barely exploited psychological dimension of the photographic portrait. Dissatisfied with the photographic image reduced to a brief moment, in 1972 she began her „Jahresportraits“, a long-term photographic project or life project respectively in which she photographs herself every five years almost daily over the course of a year. Unadorned, the artist documents not only her private and professional everyday life, but also the passage of time, at the end of which stands the unavoidable. Shockingly close, the viewer is confronted with Kubelka vom Gröllers as well as his own transience.

This compelling examination of time and transience is also reflected in her daily portraits of relatives, friends, and colleagues, and is condensed in the 1000-piece photographic portrait of Lore Bondy, the artist’s mother.

Kubelka vom Gröller’s works are testimonies to female self-empowerment and an extremely sensitive observation of the Other. As a photographer, she is also always involved herself: in front of the camera as an object of investigation or behind the camera as an interacting, sympathizing counterpart. Here, the camera creates both proximity and distance. The use of photography in this case is to explore mental states and identities rather than a medium of representation.

Female self-exploration and empowerment can also be perceived in the photographs of her “Pin-Ups” series taken in Paris in 1973/74. The still young artist stages herself in a hotel room in classic pin-up poses. In sexy lingerie, she stretches on the bed, in the bathroom, and in front of the mirror. Only the camera in her hand, often in front of her face like a mask, disturbs the association with the subjects from ordinary “men’s magazines.” Kubelka vom Gröller adopts the role in front of and behind the camera here, blurring the line between voyeur and object of desire.

This often playful shifting of boundaries between in front of and behind the camera is also evident in her collaboratively directed “Bikini” series with Franz West, from 1975. Kubelka vom Gröller shared a long and close friendship with Franz West, in the course of which a number of collaborative projects and works came into being. Kubelka vom Gröller’s day portrait of her artist friend is especially touching. Over the course of a day, she accompanied her friend with her camera, creating a complex portrait of the artist.

The confrontation with time, transience, and aging can also be found in Kubelka vom Gröller’s filmic work. The silent b/w movies, usually 3 minutes long, confront the viewer with himself in the mirror of the other in just as consistent a manner as her photographic works.

boa-basedonart is pleased to present collaborative works with Franz West, daily portraits, pin-ups as well as a selection of her movies curated by the artist.

In 1990, Kubelka vom Gröller founded the “School for Artistic Photography” in Vienna, which she directed herself until 2010, when she handed over to Anja Manfredi. This institute for many artists beyond the borders of Austria, until today is a fundamental location for the exploration of the medium of photography.  Of similar importance for the moving images is the “School for Independent Film” in Vienna, founded by her in 2006, under her leadership until 2013, and which is directed today by Philip Fleischmann.

Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller has received several awards for her work, including the Austrian Art Prize for Artistic Photography in 1999, the Grand Austrian State Prize for Artistic Photography in 2005, the Austrian Art Prize for Film in 2016, and the ExtraVALUE Film Award, at the Viennale 2019. In 2020, the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg presented a major retrospective of her work.

We are thanking Dietmar Schwärzler and sixpackfilm for their kind support.
