On the occasion of this year‘s „düsseldorf photo+“ festival we present the works of two artists with a corresponding fascination for the human image. Japanese-born Hiroh Kikai (1945-2020) and Canadian-born, Berlin-based Joel Stevenett (b. 1980) each have their own unique photographic style, but they address similar questions.
What connects Hiroh Kikai and Joel Stevenett across time and distance is their artistic approach. Both are influenced by the photography of August Sander and, like him, they are driven by the humanistic idea of depicting a cross-section of society in all its complexity.
For his Persona series, Hiroh Kikai photographed striking personalities in front of Sensoji Temple in Tokyo‘s Asakusa district for over 40 years. Until 50 years ago, Asakusa was a thriving pilgrimage center and popular pleasure quarter; still today, the district provides the supportive backdrop for a flourishing of individuality. Hiroh Kikai‘s photographs provide an impressive testament to this.
