We dedicate the 2nd exhibition of „Resonances of DiStances“ to the work of Shigeko Kubota (1937-2015) and Hanae Utamura (1980-).

Both artists are or were inspired by the relationships between nature, technology and the human being – the transfusion of the organic with the artificial. In a poetic yet unsparing manner, the works exhibited at basedonart explore the ephemeral.

Shigeko Kubota is a pioneer of video art. Her work is characterised by great emotional depth and poetic acumen.
From the mid-1960s onwards, Kubota became involved in the New York Fluxus movement around Geoge Macunias. Later she turned to video art. Inspired by her intense encounter with Marcel Duchamp, she developed the first video sculptures and is still considered one of the most important and first representatives of this genre.
Long overshadowed by the fame of her husband Nam June Paik, her artistic legacy is now being appropriately honored at the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo and this August at MoMA, New York, among others.

„Video is ghost of yourself“ Shigeko Kubota

Bright pink cherry blossoms and a crystal clear blue sky – Kubota‘s „Rock Video: Cherry Blossom“ (1986) is a video work that deconstructs nature in a kaleidoscopic way, breaking down natural spatial boundaries through electronic modification.

„My Father“ (1973-75) is the title of the black-and-white video, documenting the last days of Kubota‘s seriously ill father. In one sequence of the video, Kubota watches television with him on New Year‘s Eve. Her father appears solemn while the television broadcasts a melodramatic musical performance. After her father‘s death, Kubota cries alone in front of the monitor. The artist uses the video to preserve her father‘s presence and to process her grief. The intimate depiction of the loss creates an intense connection with the viewer.

In addition to the video works, basedonart shows drawings by the artist.

In her artistic practice, Hanae Utamura also explores the tension between nature and civilization, in particular the relationship between humans, science and nature. She understands and uses her own body as a conduit. It serves her as a transmitter between the conflicts of human and non-human forces. In her „Secret Performance Series“ (2010-13), the artist‘s black-clothed figure performs strangely alleged rituals in vast and seemingly uninhabited landscapes – Sisyphus’ acts to tame nature. Deserts and snowfields are swept, raked and brushed, circles are drawn in barren stretches of land.

The disaster around Fukushima marks a caesura for Utamura. She confronts this turning point with the series „Inverted Horizon“. In 2011, the artist travelled to Japan to the areas affected by the catastrophe and attempted to reflect on the loss of her family. In the tension between the catastrophe and the media spectacle she performed an artistic intervention in which she involved her mother. Tied to her mother with a rope, the artist draws circles in the midst of the destruction as if on an umbilical cord. The photographic works exhibited at basedonart bear witness to this intense confrontation with transience.

To express her artistic concerns, Hanae Utamura uses a variety of techniques and media, including video, performance, photography, and sculpture. Utamura currently lives in Buffalo and Tokyo. In addition to her numerous exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Korea and the USA, she has received the Shiseido Art Egg Award, Tokyo, and has been a visiting artist at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart and Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, among others.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Shigeko Kubota Video Art Foundation.

In der 2. Ausstellung von „Resonances of DiStances“ zeigen wir Arbeiten von Shigeko Kubota (1937-2015) und Hanae Utamura (1980-). Beide Künstlerinnen sind oder waren inspiriert von den Beziehungen zwischen Natur, Technologie und dem Menschen – der Transfusion des Organischen mit dem Künstlichen. In poetischer und doch schonungsloser Weise erzählen die bei basedonart ausgestellten Werke von der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Vergänglichen.

Shigeko Kubota ist eine Pionierin der Videokunst. Ihr Werk zeichnet sich durch eine große emotionale Tiefe und poetischen Scharfsinn aus. Ab Mitte der 1960er-Jahre engagierte Kubota sich in der New Yorker Fluxusbewegung um Geoge Macunias. Später wandte sie sich der Videokunst zu. Inspiriert von ihrer intensiven Begegnung mit Marcel Duchamp entwickelt sie die ersten Videoskulpturen und gilt bis heute als eine der wichtigsten und ersten Vertreterinnen dieses Genres. Lange überstrahlt vom Ruhm ihres Mannes Nam June Paik wird nun ihr künstlerischer Nachlass angemessen gewürdigt u. a. im National Museum of Art, Osaka, im Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokio und im August diesen Jahres im MoMA, New York.

Blassrosa Kirschblüten und ein klarer blauer Himmel Kubotas “Rock Video: Cherry Blossom” (1986) ist ein Video welches auf kaleidoskopische Weise die Natur dekonstruiert und so mittels elektronischer Modifikation die natürlichen räumlichen Grenzen aufbricht.

„My Father“ (1973-75) ist der Titel des Schwarz-Weiß-Videos, welches die letzten Tage von Kubotas schwer erkrankten Vaters dokumentiert. In einer Sequenz des Videos sieht Kubota in der Silvesternacht mit ihm fern. Ihr Vater wirkt feierlich, während der Fernseher eine melodramatische Musikvorstellung ausstrahlt. Nach dem Tod des Vaters weint Kubota allein vor dem Monitor. Die Künstlerin nutzt das Video, um die Anwesenheit ihres Vaters zu bewahren und ihre Trauer zu verarbeiten. Durch die intime Darstellung des Verlustes entsteht eine intensive Verbindung zum Betrachter.

Auch Hanae Utamura erforscht in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis das Spannungsfeld zwischen Natur und Zivilisation, speziell die Beziehung zwischen Mensch, Wissenschaft und Natur. Ihren eigenen Körper versteht und benutzt sie dabei als Leitungskanal. Er dient ihr als Transmitter zwischen den Konflikten von menschlichen und nicht menschlichen Kräften. In ihrer „Secret Performance Series“ (2010-13) vollführt die schwarz gekleidete Figur der Künstlerin seltsam anmutende Rituale in weiten und scheinbar unbewohnten Landschaften – vermeintliche Sisyphushandlungen zur Zähmung der Natur. Wüsten und Schneefelder werden gefegt, geharkt und gebürstet, Kreise in kargen Landstrichen gezogen.

Die Katastrophe rund um Fukushima markiert eine Zäsur für Hanae Utamura. Mit der Serie „Inverted Horizon“ stellt sich Utamura diesem Wendepunkt. 2011 reist sie nach Japan in die von der Katastrophe betroffenen Gebiete und versucht mittels künstlerischer Intervention, in die sie ihre Mutter mit einbindet, den Verlust der Familie in der Spannung zwischen Katastrophe und medialem Spektakel zu reflektieren. Mit einem Seil an ihre Mutter gebunden, zieht die Künstlerin wie an einer Nabelschnur Kreise inmitten der Zerstörung. Die bei basedonart ausgestellten Fotoarbeiten geben Zeugnis von dieser intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergänglichkeit.

Hanae Utamura lebt zur Zeit in Buffalo und Tokio. Neben ihren zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Europa, Japan, Korea und den USA erhielt sie u. a. den Shiseido Art Egg Award, Tokyo und war als Stipendiatin u. a. auf der Zeche Zollverein in Essen, im Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart und im Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.
