Ancient Chinese townscapes are characterized by sloped roofs, coloured glazed tiles and decorative figures. Depicted here is a sancai-glazed ceramic roof-figure from the Qing dynasty that is modeled as a lion, decorated with green and yellow glazes. In terms of colour hierarchy, yellow is regarded as a noble colour that symbolizes centralised power. The colour green is likewise considered to be pure, representative of the beginning of growing. As such, this roof-figure reflects traditional Chinese colour culture from an ancient perspective.
