Reflection and philosophizing turned into drawing – this is how one could read the drawings of the artist Andrea Tippel, who was born in Hirsau in the Black Forest in 1945 and died in Berlin in 2012. Tippel’s works allow the viewer to participate in the artist’s thought processes in a variety of ways. The completion of a drawing is often preceded by sketches, calculations, diagrams and drafts. What has been started, broken off, thought about and thought through weaves itself into complex systems. The drawings are not only complex and philosophical, but also cheerful and full of lightness and irony. This ingenious interplay of humor and poetry in Andrea Tippel’s work is also evident in her unconventional and exquisitely designed artist’s books.Besides drawings and artist’s books, Andrea Tippel’s oeuvre includes a large number of sculptures and objects in which, similar to her drawings, everyday life is reflected.
Düsseldorf-based artist Tobias Brembeck is also a close observer of his everyday surroundings. In his drawings, collages and objects, he distils these observations into both humorous and poetic amalgams. Similar to the works of Andrea Tippel, Tobias Brembeck’s works are at the same time full of lightness and complexity. His subtle, one could almost say mischievous, handling of his artistic material testifies to his extraordinary perceptiveness.
